Police have advised visitors to south coast beaches to be aware of the risk of sharks in waters near Broulee.

A crew of the Westpac Surf Life Saving Helicopter told police they saw several sharks feeding on a whale carcass that swam about 6 meters in the water about 300 meters east of Broulee Island. At 19. December at 30 o’clock.

At nearby North Broulee Beach, popular with vacationers this time of year, there have been concerns about the safety of beachgoers as the carcass is near the beach.

Police warned swimmers and recreational boat users to be aware of the increasing presence of sharks in these waters.

On 19. December at 7 p.m. two ships under the supervision of Surf Lifesaving attached a towline to the whale and towed the carcass about two kilometers out to sea.

The Eden water police will be on Sunday the 20th. December, be on site for a further assessment of the carcass.

NSW Surf Lifesaving, in consultation with the Eurobodalla Council, closes the beaches of North and South Broulee and conducts drone and jet ski patrols throughout the day to ensure the safety of the area.

The South Coast Police District officer on duty, Chief Inspector Peter Volf, said those planning to fish have been advised to exercise particular caution.

« People should be aware that sharks are attracted to whale carcasses and avoid the area to avoid unnecessary distractions for the sharks while feeding, » he said.
