South Australian Prime Minister Steven Marshall has pledged to continue supporting motorsport after the Adelaide 500 was phased out last night

The announcement came as a shock to many South Australians who took to social media to express their displeasure

However, Prime Minister Marshall has said he will remain a fan of motorsport and examine other future opportunities

« We remain a strong supporter of motorsport and will act quickly to assess all options for future motorsport events, » Marshall told The Advertiser

« The Superloop Adelaide 500 has been an event icon for over 20 years, and this decision was made with careful consideration

« COVID-19 has presented significant challenges for the events industry, and uncertainty and other factors have become an insurmountable obstacle in the critical situation to organize a successful race

« South Australia is the benchmark for hosting world-class events, and we will continue to invest in this space to create local jobs

South Australia’s Tourism Commission has said the money spent on the Adelaide 500 will support a mix of one-off events, with the plan to continue boosting tourism in the state of SA

In 2019, the SATC reported that the 2019 Adelaide 500 achieved a record economic benefit for the state

« $ 45.9 million was injected into the South Australian economy, with 15,200 interstate visitors traveling to South Australia to attend the event and the creation of 435 new full-time equivalent jobs, » said declared the commission

However, from 2019 to 2020, the number of spectators fell by almost 20% and that, along with COVID-19, saw the end of the legendary event in South Australia
