A 29-year-old Bundaberg man was charged with terrorist offenses following an investigation by the Queensland Joint Counter Terrorism Team

A Bundaberg man was charged with terrorist offenses following an investigation by the Queensland Joint Counter Terrorism Team (QLD JCTT).

The 29-year-old Kepnock man was arrested Friday and charged with a number of acts in preparation for or planning terrorist acts.

It is believed that he planned to carry out a terrorist attack in the Bundaberg region and applied for firearms training.

Police confiscated a number of electronic devices and a notebook from the address for evidence purposes.

It is alleged that the electronic devices contained documents indicating a desire to commit violent extremism.

Scott Lee, Australian Federal Police (AFP) deputy counterterrorism commissioner, said QLD JCTT investigators had targeted criminal behavior to keep the community safe.

« The decision to indict this man was made to prevent a terrorist attack in Australia and to protect the community, » said Deputy Commissioner Lee.

« The investigation underscores the professionalism and commitment of the people and agencies involved in the JCTT, as well as their commitment to holding people accountable for their criminal acts. « 

Cheryl Scanlon, deputy commissioner for the Queensland Police Service (QPS) said this was an example of partner agencies working together to keep the community safe.

« These results are due to their hard work and dedication to community safety, » said Deputy Commissioner Scanlon

The QLD JCTT consists of members from the AFP, the Queensland Police Service and the Australian Security Intelligence Organization.
