Kings XI Punjab batsman Nicholas Pooran collects a check for the’ Unacademy Let’s Crack It Sixes’ after telling his team to win over the Delhi Capitals with 53 runs of 28 balls in the IPL game in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on Jan.. November.
ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Eight members of the West Indies Twenty20 International squad – led by Vice-Captain Nicholas Pooran – will join six test reserves to form an A-squad for West Indies that will face New Zealand with an « A » – Match series next month.
Pooran, Fabian Allen, Brandon King, Kyle Mayers, Rovman Powell, Romario Shepherd, Oshane Thomas and Hayden Walsh Jr. will be in the two four-day first-class games from 3. until 6. December at the Bay Oval in Mount his Maunganui and from 11. until 14. December at the Saxton Oval in Nelson.
« This series is an opportunity for our players to play world-class cricket against foreign opponents and experience different conditions in New Zealand, » said Roger Harper, Chief Selector of Windies.
« It will also help to keep them in line in the event that a replacement for the test team becomes necessary, as we will have players who have played red ball cricket and need to think about it. ”
No captain has been named, but CMC anticipates the West Indian selectors will switch positions for the two games to gain insight into the leadership skills of the players in question – most likely Pooran and Rovman Powell, a West Indian substitute Islands ODI captain last year.
Selectors will be closely monitoring Pooran’s performance as the left-handed player hasn’t played a top-tier game since December 2014 and his exploits in white ball formats for the Windies have prompted calls to pick the Poories on the test page.
Pooran has only played three top-notch games in his career – for Trinidad & Tobago Red Force – and West Indian Selectors have been reluctant to heed calls for his Test pick because they have broadly stated they are unaware of his current form or ability in the longer formats for the simple reason that he hasn’t played many Red Ball matches recently.
Pooran’s break from world-class games was caused by a vehicle accident in January 2015 in which he sustained a career-threatening leg injury and returned to the Twenty20 domestic leagues after returning to the game about three years ago.
With the exception of former U19 pacer from West India, Jayden Seales, all other players have played first-class games to varying degrees and with varying degrees of success over the past three seasons.
Seales, 19, has yet to make his world-class debut but has played a handful of T20 games for champions Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League in his hometown of Trinidad this year.
He was part of the Windies Test Reserves on the current Tour of New Zealand. It is a decision made by the selectors, who they have described as « development policy » for the young pacemaker.
