TOKYO (Kyodo) – FC Tokyo of the J-League were eliminated from the AFC Champions League by 1-0 against Chinese FC Beijing at the Education City Stadium in Qatar on Sunday.
After a first half underscored by misses on both sides, the Chinese Super League opened the gate when Brazilian-born Chinese striker Alan scored a cross from midfielder Renato Augusto after the pair teamed up on a series of near misses.
Without the injured Diego Oliveira, Tokyo’s attack was not cohesive, although fellow Brazilian Leandro repeatedly came close to the goal.
The J-League side looked sluggish after the break and kept giving the ball to Renato Augusto in midfield, who then stormed to the right before crossing to Alan near the penalty area.
The defeat shattered Tokyo FC’s hopes of reaching the quarter-finals for the first time.
