Detectives spoke to the mother of a five-month-old girl whose death last month in Brisbane is now considered suspect.
The baby was born on the morning of April 16. Found unconscious and not breathing in the family home in a residential complex on King Street in Annerley on November 11 after the mother called Triple-0.
Detective Acting Inspector Rod Watts says the two parents were seen with the baby at nearby Buranda shopping mall the afternoon before the baby died.
« The baby seemed happy and healthy. Something happened between then and 8:00 a.m. the next morning and it was found that the baby was unresponsive, « he said.
Acting inspector Watts said the police did not consider the death immediately suspicious, but began an investigation into the results of the autopsy two days after the death.
« There has to be a number of exams to be done, examinations to be sure of where we are, the medical evidence takes time . . . it takes some time to get to that point, « said Watts.
He said the 32-year-old woman lived in the unit complex where the baby lived and was found and that no one had attended the unit in the hours between the family appearance and the paramedics arriving.
Acting inspector Watts said the family had no longer lived in the complex and was not known to the police or child protection services.
« There is a very small circle of people involved . . . it’s a close community or family, « he said.
Police from the Morningside Child Protection and Investigation Department and special police from the Child Trauma Department are investigating.
