A reconstructed Dick Johnson Racing with an all-new driving line-up will mean the start of the 2021 Supercars Championship by conceding a camber advantage – rival Triple Eight Race Engineering

DJR re-emerges as a stand-alone entity for 2021 after Roger Penske’s withdrawal from Supercars after six-year involvement The racing mogul bought 51% of the team’s shares in 2014, creating DJR Team Penske

Penske’s withdrawal was negotiated in the days following the Bathurst 1000 and confirmed last Saturday morning It was blamed on the global coronavirus pandemic, but the bitter taste of the various 2019 issues it still has would have played a role as well a role

In his time in Supercars, Penske won three consecutive driver’s championships thanks to Scott McLaughlin, the three-team championship in four years and the 2019 Bathurst 1000 victory

Anton De Pasquale and Will Davison were full-time riders for DJR, replacing IndyCar-linked Scott McLaughlin and Fabian Coulthard, who the team offered an enduro co-drive

The new rider line-up is one of the main reasons DJR plans to make a ‘modest’ start to the 2021 Supercars Championship, which is set to begin with two 250km sprints in Bathurst in late February

“I think we have modest expectations for the start of the year and it’s realistic,” said Story “And I think we have to be realistic because they (Triple Eight) have continuity with their line. -up of pilots and continuity with their team

« They are going to change partners, but basically continuity is something very important I wouldn’t say that would give them the upper hand but they are a very strong team and they are tough to beat and have been tough to beat and we’ve been fortunate to have some success against them over the past three seasons

« But it’s not an easy thing to maintain, especially when you make the changes that we have. But we have confidence in the direction we are taking and although we have modest expectations for the short term, we are convinced that we have set up a very strong team and a very solid line-up And this is what we will build on for the future «

If Coulthard accepts a co-pilot role, that means current endurance co-pilots Tim Slade and Tony D’Alberto will be absent from a concert

This shouldn’t worry Slade, who is set to join the championship full-time in 2021 with the new Ford Mustang Cooldrive owned by the Blanchard family, while Alberto’s future is unresolved

Encouragingly for DJR, key partners including donor Shell V-Power have re-signed multi-year agreements

The engineering team should also remain fundamentally intact The future of tech guru Ludo Lacroix had been called into question, but now appears to be solidifying

« Ludo is a mercurial guy and obviously we would like him to continue with us and these are discussions that have yet to take place, » Story said

« But for all intents and purposes, we don’t intend to make any changes and we are having very productive discussions at the moment »

DJR has also been renamed as the homologation team for the 2022 Ford Mustang Gen3, although Ford has not yet entered the category.
