When officials arrived at Waitangi West Beach, just over a quarter of the stranded whales were still alive but weak.

A mass stranding has killed nearly 100 whales in the remote Chatham Islands in the Pacific.

Rescue efforts to save them have been hampered by the location of the island, about half a mile off the east coast of New Zealand.

A total of 97 pilot whales and three dolphins died in the stranding, which was first reported to the New Zealand Ministry of Nature Conservation (DOC) at 12 noon. Sunday 30 p.m..

When officials arrived at Waitangi West Beach on Chatham Island nearly three hours later, just over a quarter of the stranded whales were still alive, despite being very weak.

Officials said a power outage also made it difficult to contact people as part of the rescue operation.

DOC Biodiversity Ranger, Jemma Welch, said: « Only 26 of the whales were still alive at this point, most of them appeared to be very weak and were euthanized due to the harsh sea conditions and the almost certain euthanasia of sharks in the water that came through such a stranding are brought in. «

Two whales were stranded and put to sleep on Monday when a team of DOC employees made a follow-up visit to the construction site.

A ceremony was later held to honor the spirit of the whales, which must naturally decompose.

Such incidents are not uncommon on the Chatham Islands. In 1918 up to 1. 000 animals on a single beach.

Bulky whale strandings have occurred throughout recorded modern history, and why this occurs is a question that continues to perturb marine biologists.

At the end of September, several hundred whales died in shallow waters off the Australian coast in one of the world’s largest mass whale strandings.
