Tomic, now ranked 226 in the world, was pushed to his limits on Wednesday at the Queensland Tennis Center by the little-known Akira Santillan.

Santillan, a Tokyo-born Australian player ranked 282 in the world, won the first set 7-6, with the points on his serve being 3-3, 30 points when the wet conditions pushed the players off six forced.

They returned, with Tomic winning the second set 6-3 before winning the third set 7-5 in a long competition that ended in an empty Pat Rafter arena due to the indifferent conditions outside.

Tomic, now 28, was voted 17th in the world in January 2016 and reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals in 2011.
