Dutch soccer player Quincy Promes was arrested earlier this year in connection with a knife stab at a family reunion, according to a Dutch news report on Sunday.

The 28-year-old Ajax striker Promes « is suspected of the attack leading to serious bodily harm, » said the popular daily De Telegraaf.

The incident took place in late July at a family reunion in a shed in the picturesque town of Abcoude, just outside Amsterdam, the newspaper said.

« A relative was seriously injured, including very serious knee injuries, » the incident said.

Promes allegedly got into an argument after an argument with the relative and other family members intervened immediately, the newspaper said.

Amsterdam police spokesman Jelmer Geerds told AFP that a « 28-year-old man has been arrested » but declined to provide further details.

He said the suspect is in custody and a decision on whether to be released on bail will be made later Sunday.

Ajax couldn’t be immediately reached for comment, but the NOS public broadcaster said the club had confirmed Promes was out of practice on Sunday.

Amsterdam-born Promes, known for his speed and technical style of play, moved from Sevilla FC to Ajax last year, making a € 15m move.

Before that he played for Spartak in Moscow, where he was named Footballer of the Year in Russia in 2017.
