The former number 1 in the world in doubles and the Indian tennis legend Sania Mirza has received a wildcard entry for the WTA 500 event in Abu Dhabi

Former world number 1 in doubles and Indian tennis legend Sania Mirza has received a wildcard entry for the WTA 500 event in Abu Dhabi.

Mirza will work with Andreja Klepac from Slovenia at the first WTA event of the year. It’s not clear whether Mirza’s partnership with the Slovenian is long-term or just for this brand new Abu Dhabi Women’s Tennis Open.

The Indian, currently ranked 239th in the world in doubles, was back on the pitch during the Hobart Open last year after a long hiatus of 27 months due to injuries and pregnancy, but the run was halted due to the coronavirus Pandemic canceled.

In addition to Mirza, 23-year-old Riya Bhatia will also be in action for India in the qualifying round of the women’s singles in Abu Dhabi.

The Abu Dhabi Women’s Open starts on June 6th. January and last until 13. January. It will be one of three WTA 500 hard court tournaments before the Australian Open kicks off next month.
