. . The Central Coast Mariners overtook the Newcastle Jets 1-0 in a tense F3 derby and can thank keeper Mark Birighitti for the incredible exploits.

. .

Birighitti stole the show in the second half with two incredible saves to help the home team maintain their slim lead.

Birighitti had one of the highlights of the game when he made a stunning stop to deny Newcastle a certain goal at the beginning of the second verse.

Steven Ugarkovic started a beautiful string of passes for the Jets before Ramy Najjarine threaded the ball through for Valentino Yuel.

Yuel then went back inside to Kosta Petratos who was sure of getting the score but his shot was blocked by Birighitti who showed great reflexes to get the stop off.

The Mariners goalkeeper threw Angus Thurgate a curling stroke over the bar to save the home team again.

Both teams struggled at times to find the right option on the final pass or to shoot on a common theme, but it was the home team that took the 1-0 lead at half-time.

Alou Kuol had the breakthrough when the Mariners in 43. Minute scored the hit.

It wasn’t the most technical or well executed game, but the determination and struggle to get on the ball first when the opportunity presented itself separated the Mariners early on.

Stefan Nigros pass landed in the penalty area and Connor O’Toole could not clean it up. Kuol showed great desperation to get to the ball first.

The Jets had in the 10th. Minute the early race and a real scoring chance when Kosta Petratos gave Angus Thurgate a scoring chance. However, his left foot kick sailed across the bar.

It was the first of several missed opportunities for both sides who played with a lot of energy but didn’t get the execution necessary to capitalize.

Young Gun Jaden Casella provided the Mariners with a much-needed boost of energy as the home team gained the upper hand in the final stages of the first half.

Casella shot in the 31. Minute on the ball and connected to Matt Simon, who had a chance to give Central Coast the lead, but his shot was deflected for a corner.

The cross from Jack Clisby was dangerous and Casela again showed promising confidence to support herself with a nice hit that was deflected.

There was, however, a replay argument showing a possible handball by Kosta Petratos although he may not have had much time to react and the VAR decided not to give the home team a penalty for it.

Another chance for the Mariners was begging when Oliver Bozanic sent a free kick over the post.

With four shots between the 24. and 34. In the 2nd minute it was clear the Mariners were coming to the top, but it wouldn’t mean anything if they didn’t take advantage.

That they finally made it through Kuol and it was a big blow to the Jets, who had some big missed opportunities of their own in the later stages of the half.

Najjarine fielded Yuel, who was steaming on the right edge before looking at Roy O’Donovan, but the final pass wasn’t good and the striker couldn’t deliver.

Najjarine showed another moment of brilliance. Shortly thereafter, a second touch set a shot on goal, which went straight to the goalkeeper, and the Mariners let them call through Kuol just before the break.

Heroics in Birighitti’s goal highlighted the second half as the Jets threatened to improve the score.

Najjarine was the man most likely to continue looking for the visitors and worrying the Mariners ahead of Ugarkovic’s shot on goal, but Birighitti was back to save.

Josh Nisbet had a perfect challenge preparing for the match winner in the box but sent it straight to the goalkeeper.

Whether it was getting the ball off your own goal or making crucial stops in defensive cover, the Mariners were determined to turn the Jets off.

A devious move on the corner saw Daniel De Silva almost claim victory, but his shot scratched the net and missed to the right.

Bozanic saw Jack Duncan off his line late and tried in the long run. It would have got the Central Coast going loyally, but it just scratched the posts.
