A severe storm warning for heavy rain, heavy hail and damaging winds has been issued for parts of South East Queensland with 68mm already falling in a Brisbane suburb in an hour
From 255 p.m., severe thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near Strathpine, Redcliffe, Caboolture and Numinbah Valley
Storms were moving southeasterly They are expected to affect Coolangatta, Cleveland and Montville by 325 hrs and the area southwest of Caloundra, Bribie Island and northern Bribie Island by 355 hrs
Earlier, Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Peter Markworth said the falls would drag on most of the day and could impact today’s AFL grand final.
« We expect to have a good chunk of the afternoon, potentially and into the evening, so it looks like it’s going to be a rather wet grand finale, » he said.
« There will be mostly light to moderate rains, but there will be heavier elements built into this rain band, heavier showers, so you will sometimes see that the rain sometimes goes all the way to heavier showers. »

A bushfire on Fraser Island and northerly winds are the reasons Brisbane suburbs are blanketed in smoke this morning
A spokesperson for the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services said while there were standard risk reductions underway, there were no active bushfires or large burns in the immediate area from Brisbane
The spokesperson said calls had been coming in since 1 a.m. about the strong smell of smoke across the city
A « stay informed » advisory was issued by QFES yesterday regarding the Fraser Island fire, which was burning along the Wathumba Trail and west of Orchid Beach Township
Residents of the area have been warned they will be affected by the smoke, with reduced visibility and air quality
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Shane Kennedy said reasonable northerly winds were the reason Brisbane residents were now waking up smelling smoke
He said harsh conditions could help reduce smoke over the city, but showers forecast for today could help clean the air
He said the rain was unlikely to significantly disrupt tonight’s AFL Grand Final, with drops of 1-6mm expected
M Kennedy said there was a greater chance of showers and storms on the Darling Downs and further inland, with a chance of rain of 10-30mm, with isolated falls of 60mm
