Ashley Judd pondered her « grueling 55 hour » rescue as she continues to recover from a « catastrophic » fall in a rainforest in Congo.
The 52-year-old actress posted on Instagram Tuesday and shared a number of rescue pictures. She told her 468,000 followers: “Without my Congolese brothers and sisters, my internal bleeding would probably have killed me and I would have lost my leg. «
» I wake up crying with gratitude and am deeply moved by every person who contributed something life-giving and healing during my grueling 55-hour odyssey, « Judd continued.
Judd broke in four places the leg and suffered nerve damage after tripping over a fallen tree in the dark. The star had worked to track down bonobos, an endangered species of great ape.
On Monday Judd spoke at length about the help she had received in her time of need.
« Dieumerci stretched out his leg and put it under my grossly misshapen left leg to try to keep it calm. It was broken in four places and had nerve damage. Dieumerci (“Thanks be to God”) sat on the rainforest floor for 5 hours without fidgeting or flinching. He was with me in my original pain. He was my witness, « Judd explained.
Judd added how another man, Papa Jean, discovered her after a five-hour search and » calmly assessed « her broken leg.
» He told me what to do. I bit a stick. I held onto Maud. And Papa Jean was certainly starting to manipulate my broken bones and get them back into a position where I could be transported while I screamed and writhed, ”Judd explained. “How he did it so methodically when I was like an animal is a mystery to me. He saved me. &, he had to do this twice! «
Judd added how six men » carefully « moved her into a hammock » with as little crowding as possible « and walked » over rough terrain « for three hours to take them out.
» Didier is a motorcycle hazards. I sat facing backwards, his back my back. When I started to sink, passed out, he would call me to readjust my position and lean on him, ”Judd explained.
“Maradona was in the back of the motorcycle, I looked at him. He held my broken leg under his heel and I held the broken top together with both of my hands, ”she continued.
Last week Judd spoke about her accident in her intensive care bed in South Africa, where she recognized her « privilege » in accessing medical care, when she discovered that a Congolese person may have lost their leg or life. </ During a virtual conversation with Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times on Friday, Judd said bonobos are the reason why she spends time with her “life partner” in the rainforest in the first place. And although she didn't state who her partner is, the actress was previously married to Dario Franchitti from 2001 to 2013.
