MELBOURNE: The Indian Ankita Raina and her Russian partner Kamilla Rakhimova won the Phillip Island Trophy WTA 250 tennis tournament in Melbourne on Friday. The pair defeated Russians Anna Blinkova and Anastasia Potapova 2: 6, 6: 4, 10: 7. This is Ankita’s first title on the WTA tour.
The win will help Ankita, 28, get into the top 100 of the WTA rankings in doubles, with the live rankings currently showing them in 94th place. She won ITF doubles and WTA 125k titles before winning on Friday.
The Indo-Russian couple had an impressive 4-6, 6-4, 11-9 against Franceska Jones and Nadia Podoroska in the doubles semi-finals achieved. Ankita also won two games in the tournament’s singles and reached the round of 16, where she lost to Australian Kimberly Birrell on Monday.
Previously, Ankita was the fifth Indian to play in the main draw of a Grand Slam when she was with Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu made the cut for the women’s doubles at the Australian Open. The pair lost their first round match 3: 6, 0: 6 against the Australians Belinda Woolcock and Olivia Gadecki.
