SYDNEY (Reuters) – New Year’s Eve fireworks will take place over Sydney Harbor this year but will be shortened to just a few minutes The city area will be restricted to those with reservations at restaurants, cafes and hotels in order to limit the spread of Covid-19
The main sites overlooking the port, usually coveted by thousands of revelers to watch the traditional 12-minute fireworks display, will be dedicated to health workers treating Covid-19 patients and firefighters
Although Australia has recorded only weeks of daily new, single-digit cases of Covid-19, New South Wales State Minister Gladys Prejiklian said crowd numbers will be limited to the event in regions that typically attract thousands of viewers
« New Year’s Eve celebrations will be a symbol of hope and optimism for the coming year, » Ms. Prejiklian told reporters in Sydney.
« But unless you have a reservation at a restaurant or cafe, please don’t expect to go »
Ms. Berejiklian said that those without a reservation will not be able to get to the city
Australia has recorded just over 27,600 new coronavirus cases and 907 deaths, which is far fewer than many other developed countries
The state of Victoria – the epicenter of the Covid-19 outbreak in Australia – said it has now been 10 days without any infections detected.
