The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) is warning of the possibility of extremely dangerous thunderstorms in southeast Queensland this afternoon, with a chance of giant hail and torrential rain.

The BOM said a shift of southerly winds was combining with a surface basin over the interior parts of the state.

“It provides a very robust preparation for today’s severe thunderstorm activity,” said meteorologist Kimba Wong..

Storms can progress from Double Island Point down Brisbane and then inland to Toowoomba and Kingaroy.

“Given the robust setting, there is already a risk of some very dangerous isolated thunderstorms littering there as well,” said Ms. Wong.

She said they had the power to create devastating winds, giant hail and periods of torrential rain.

“I encourage people to follow any warnings as they come.
