An Uber driver told a teenage girl he could « make her trip cheaper » before raping her in a car in Melbourne.

Hafiz Babar pleaded guilty to the Victoria District Court earlier this month after initially denying the allegations.

The 32-year-old was jailed for five years on Friday but can be paroled after serving three years in prison.

« To say the crime had a profound impact on the young victim is an understatement, » said District Court judge Chris Yan.

He picked up the 18-year-old university student from a party in southeast Melbourne in 2018 and she was in the back of the car.

She insisted that she wasn’t interested and didn’t want to do such a thing, the court was told.

Babar got out of the car and sat in the back seat next to the victim. He told her he could make the trip even cheaper.

He started touching her thigh as the woman repeatedly said « No » to him and tried to wriggle away from him before raping her.

The young woman managed to open the car door and fled, but Babar tried to grab her leg.

She ran to a nearby house and tearfully told the woman who opened the door that a « scary guy » touched her in the car.

« He touched me, » the woman said to the homeowners, who drove them to a nearby police station.

However, the judge took into account Babar’s depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and social isolation from family in Pakistan when delivering his verdict.
