A man attacked eight people with a « sharp weapon » on Wednesday and seriously injured two in the Swedish city of Vetlanda. The police were investigating a possible « terrorist motive ».
The attacker was hospitalized after being shot in the leg by police when he was taken into custody in the southern city of 13,000 residents that afternoon after the attack.
Speaking to AFP, police said the man in his twenties used a « sharp weapon » while local media reported he brandished a knife.
Police initially treated the incident as « attempted murder. » « but later changed it in a statement to include an » alleged terrorist crime « without giving further details.
Resident Olivia Strandberg told SVT that she did not see the actual attack, but saw the man was taken away from her window when she was returning home from work.
« I had just got to my apartment when my best friend wrote to me saying: Don’t go out! », Sa gte Strandberg. The station showed recordings of the suspect being taken away in an ambulance on a quiet street.
At a press conference, the regional police chief Malena Grann later made it clear that a preliminary investigation was still being carried out under the name « attempted murder », but it details had become known that meant that they were also investigating « potential terrorist motives ».

Karl Melin, press officer at Sapo, declined to comment and told SVT: « The event in Vetlanda is currently a police problem. »
The local police chief Jonas Lindell told the media that they had identified five different crime scenes in the small town that were a few hundred meters apart.

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven condemned the « terrible violence » in a statement posted on his Facebook page.
