A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Sulawesi on Friday at least seven people died and hundreds were injured, the country’s civil protection agency said as panicked residents fled to safer areas after many buildings
The epicenter of the quake was six kilometers northeast of Majene City at a depth of ten kilometers.
Initial information from the country’s civil protection agency showed that four people had died and 637 others were injured in Majene. while in the neighboring province of Mamuju there were three more deaths and two dozen injured.
Thousands had fled their homes to seek safety when the quake struck shortly after 1 a.m. local time on Friday morning and damaged at least 60 houses, the agency announced.
The quake was felt strongly for about seven seconds, but did not trigger a tsunami warning.
Video s on social media showed residents escaping to a higher level on motorcycles and a child trapped under the rubble when people tried to remove rubble with bare hands.
Some buildings were badly damaged, including two hotels, the governor’s office and a mall. Sudirman Samual, a journalist from Mamuju north of the epicenter, told Reuters.
At least one route to Mamuju was interrupted due to a bridge being damaged.
The Indonesian Disaster Agency said a number of quakes have occurred in the past 24 Hours caused at least three landslides, and the power supply was interrupted.
