World news – 37 new citizens are to be officially invited to Whitsundays

Mayor Andrew Willcox spoke about the importance of citizenship ahead of Australia Day ceremonies.

New citizens from distant countries such as Brazil, France and South Africa are celebrated on Australia Day with two ceremonies in the Whitsunday region.

The region will accept 37 new citizens from 12 countries including France, Philippines, New Zealand, Great Britain, Thailand, Brazil, Canada, South Africa, China, Germany, Brazil and Spain.

A ceremony, combined with an award ceremony, will take place from 11:45 am in Bowen, and another from 3:30 pm in Airlie Beach.

Mayor Andrew Willcox said the ceremonies are an opportunity for all Australians, whether born or elected citizens, to participate in national celebrations aimed at reflecting, respecting and celebrating.

« It’s really exciting to see how much it means to these people becoming an Australian citizen and to hear the journey they took to get to this point, » said Cr Willcox.

« It is a lifelong commitment to the shared values ​​of Australia, including respect for individual freedom and dignity, the rule of law and democracy, and equal opportunities for all people. »

Cr Willcox said that Australian citizenship ceremonies an important part of the nation’s celebrations and of special meaning to those who will become citizens and to the wider Australian community.

More than 12,000 people gain citizenship at the many ceremonies held on Australia Day by local councils across the country.

« Every year, as part of the Australia Day celebrations, we have the pleasure of welcoming new Australians to our growing community, » said Cr Willcox.

« I encourage everyone in the Whitsundays to consider and reaffirm their Australian citizenship as we warmly welcome our newest citizens. »
