Design is arguably the best part of any fantasy sport. You will become the general manager and form the basis of a team that you will have to live with for an entire season. You want to be prepared, and that goes beyond just knowing the game.
There are two main types of fantasy hockey leagues: head-to-head and rotisserie. In head-to-head scoring formats, you compete against an opponent over the course of a week and the highest score goes to a win. Rotisserie formats tabulate your team’s statistics across categories and match them to your competitors in the league. The more categories you have at the end of the season, the better you are.
Also note the position distribution of the strikers. Yahoo leagues use C, LW, and RW by default, but some leagues use a generic forward (F) position that spans all three groups together. In leagues that differentiate between the three positions, many players wear two or even three eligible tags. For example, Hurricanes striker Andrew Svechnikov is LW / RW eligible. Players like this add versatility to your line-up and can be even more valuable given the challenges of a shortened 56-game season.
The categories vary by league. So it’s important to check your league’s settings. A standard Yahoo league rewards skaters for goals, assists, plus / minus, power play points, shots on goal and blocked shots. Goalkeepers are judged on wins, goals conceded and saves, with a bonus for a shutout. Commissioners can also configure settings to award Fantasy Points for PIM, Shorthanded Points, Faceoff wins and hits. Your virtual team will ultimately perform better if you have a deeper understanding of which categories are most valued in your league.
In rotisserie leagues, you need to take a different approach to diversifying your stats. Goals usually earn the most fantasy points, but if you come last in several other categories, it doesn’t mean much to come first on goals. A rotisserie league requires fantasy managers to put together well-rounded teams so that players who can score and beat (like Alex Ovechkin) have value in these formats.
Once you have your league format and scoring Understand your attitudes, it’s time to investigate. Browse the transactions (trades and signings) that took place during the off-season and see the players who are on the rise. Examine which players you think were above average or disappointed over the past year and adjust your ranking accordingly. Take that knowledge and put it into practice with mock drafts. Your understanding of fantasy will be tested against real people, and mock drafts will help refine your strategies and uncover possible tactics your competitors may use. By the time you get to your actual draft, you should know the general area that certain players get off the board in.
Ideally, you will be amazed by mainstream gamers and sleepers alike. Leagues are not won in the first round, but they can certainly be lost if you pick the wrong player. A good rule of thumb is to slowly take more risks as you design. You’ll want to target high-level players in the early rounds to establish a baseline for your team before rolling the dice for sleeper candidates. Once you’ve found a core that you are comfortable with, don’t be afraid to reach out for players who you are sure will break out this year. Observing the Average Pull Position (ADP) can be helpful in determining exactly when to pull the trigger.
According to NHL rules for 2020-21, teams must carry three goalkeepers for the entire season. It is unclear how each team will deal with this rotation, but it is unlikely that anyone would employ a three-man rotation. Even so, it is important to project how the teams will carry their crease this year. Over the past few seasons, many have often rested their top goalkeeper to make sure he was healthy for the postseason. In a shortened season, this strategy may be less emphasized. Today, however, teams often use tandems. Even stars like Tuukka Rask and Ben Bishop have admitted the crease many times over the past season. Hence, netminders like Andrei Vasilevskiy and Connor Hellebuyck are valued as there is no proven support to cut their playing time.
Furthermore, depth is vital in any position, but even more important with goalkeepers. If you miss out on one of the elite netminders, it may be worth stocking up on top-notch skaters for the first few laps and catching non-exciting but reliable netminders later. However, keep an eye on the player pool. When a run sparks and goalkeepers fly off the board, you’ll need to grab a one or two before it’s too late. There is inevitable shortage of goalkeepers as there is only one starter for each team in a game so you don’t want to be left standing in the cold. Given the added uncertainty of the shortened campaign and COVID-related logs, having three goalkeepers on your fantasy roster should be the bare minimum.
This can be difficult at the start of the season. The line configurations are fluid and there is no guarantee they will stay the same for three periods of time, let alone an entire season. However, once you find a reliable stack, your weekly cap will go up dramatically. Stacking linemates has been shown to have a positive correlation in your total score, especially in head-to-head point formats. Boston is the best example as the Marchand / Bergeron / Pastrnak unit has been dynamite for years. Targeting other high-octane crimes is a smart move because even when the skaters don’t play together with even strength, they often team up with manly advantage, which is usually another bonus for fantasy managers.
Hockey fans are prejudiced ; We have favorite teams and an aversion to opposing clubs or even individual players. When it’s time to draw, leave your prejudices at the door. It is of no use and can have detrimental effects. Also, try to understand and use your competitors’ prejudices. If Blackhawks winger Dominik Kubalik is late on the board and you think he’ll fall on you in the next round, take a look at who’s between your current and next choices. If there are some Blackhawks fans in that mix, Kubalik might get caught.
On January 13th, some players will be taking the ice cream for their first game promotion in 10 months, while others will be taking some of the most important games of their lives just four months ago played. There will be injuries, and you need to factor them into fantasy designs. If any player in the queue is seeing an Injury Tag, be sure to read the analysis to determine when they are likely to return. There are very few players worth drafting in the opening rounds if they are on track to miss months of the season. What’s the point of having them for the fantasy playoffs if you don’t qualify?
The draft is just part of the fantasy season. If after the draft or after the first few weeks of the season you’re not happy with your roster, there are many ways you can change course. Be active on the waiver wire and keep an eye out for the players being dropped by your competition. Try to make trades.

The Men’s Junior Junior World Championship in 2021 got off to a shaky start, but Hockey Canada, the International Ice Hockey Federation, and the Edmonton Organizing Committee made it into a global pandemic.
With the 2020 NHL playoff bubble in Edmonton as a template, the 10 teams arrived, played games and crowned a champion without being derailed from the COVID-19 virus.
« There will be no asterisk. The competition has taken place, » said Tom Renney, Chief Executive Officer of Hockey Canada, on Tuesday before the gold medal game, in which hosts Canada and the USA participated.
« The participation of 10 teams is exceptional in every way. »
The US beat Canada 2-0 for gold while Finland won bronze with a 4-1 win over Russia.
As of December 13, when the teams arrived in Edmonton, nearly 600 people lived a « bubble » life for 24 days, isolated from the public, according to Hockey Canada.
Teams quarantined before and after arrival. Daily and temperature checks, mandatory masks on ice, wearable technology to prevent and track possible exposure, and zero bystanders at games were measures to prevent the virus from spreading.
« We wanted to finish this tournament with 10 teams. We did it, » said Luc Tardif, co-chair of the tournament.
However, the teams have been affected by the virus and the protocols used to stop it. Sweden arrived without their regular coaching staff and some top players who tested positive before leaving this country.
Germany only had 14 skaters and two goalkeepers in the first two games of the tournament.
A third of the team remained in prolonged isolation on arrival due to positive tests during a mandatory five-day quarantine. A German player was in quarantine throughout the tournament.
« I find it regrettable what happened, » said IIHF President Rene Fasel. « We don’t know what really happened to the German team when they were out with the Swiss and a delegation from the IIHF. To have these 10 positive tests was really a surprise.
« To be fair, they beat the Swiss, went to the quarter-finals and played a very, very good game against Russia.
« Ice hockey players are very special and when they have such difficulties, they come together and really play as a team. I think that didn’t really hurt the German team. »
The men’s U20 World Cup was the first top-class IIHF tournament to take place in the pandemic.
The 2020 world championships for men and women and the world championships for men under the age of 18 have been canceled.
With funding for COVID-19 logs, Elite Hockey has shown how competitions can take place in a pandemic without the virus spreading.
After Hockey Canada put a lot of effort into hosting the men’s U20 championship, it will be under pressure to show the same commitment to the women’s ice hockey world championship in April.
The 2020 tournament in Halifax and Truro, N.S., has been postponed for one year due to the pandemic.
« If we can deliver the world’s juniors, we can deliver the women’s worlds, and our goal is to achieve that, » said Dean McIntosh, Vice President of Events, Hockey Canada.
« We firmly believe that women athletes deserve this right too, so we give them the opportunity to do it as well as possible. »
While the IIHF spoke on Tuesday of its commitment to hosting the U18 Men’s World Cup in the US in April, the female counterpart of this tournament will not take place in 2021.
The Women’s U18 World Cup, which is due to begin in Sweden on Wednesday, was canceled in September.
Trying to try a junior world championship for men under difficult circumstances is worth it for ice hockey fans at home and abroad, said Renney.
« There is no manual on how to deal with COVID or a global pandemic, » he said. « We knew we could only try.
« We felt that if we could do this in a way that puts the health and safety of all participants and the public first, it would at least be a very good attempt to breathe life into the Canadians when they do it urgently needed. » and we certainly hope beyond worldwide.
« Even a bad plan can work if everyone agrees to it. It just happens that it was a hell of a good one. »
Canadians tuned in to watch junior games in large numbers, according to TSN.
Canada’s 5-0 semi-final win over Russia on Monday drew 2.8 million viewers. The network said this was the largest television audience for a junior semi-final in the world since 2015.
Canada’s games ahead of Tuesday’s final drew an average of 2.3 million viewers, a 47 percent increase over last year’s tournament in Ostrava, Czech Republic.
The total audience of the tournament increased 71 percent in the semifinals compared to the 2020 tournament and 52 percent in the semifinals compared to the 2019 tournament in Vancouver, TSN told the Canadian press in an email.
The 2022 Junior World Championship was returned to Edmonton and Red Deer, Alta.

DENVER – Nikola Jokic scored 13 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter after losing his cool early in the game, and the Denver Nuggets battled Minnesota 123-116 on Tuesday night for their 10th straight win against the Timberwolves. Jokic shrugged off two tech fouls in the second quarter – one to hang by the rim and one to berate an official – to lead the Nuggets to a comeback win. He also had 15 rebounds. Will Barton added 20 points and Reserve JaMychal Green had 17 for the Nuggets, who wasted an 18 point lead in the first half and fell behind by eight. They took the lead 15-0 in the fourth quarter. Denver kept Minnesota goalless for more than five minutes during the crucial stretch. Angelo Russell scored 33 points and Juancho Hernangomez added 25 against his former side. It was the fifth consecutive loss for the Timberwolves. That game seemed to be heading in the direction of a blowout as Denver opened a 49:31 lead at 7:30 in the first half. But the Timberwolves caught fire when Hernangomez, who was acquired along with Malik Beasley and Jarred Vanderbilt under a contract with Denver last February, was shot. It was the second time in three days that the teams faced each other. Denver defeated the Timberwolves 124-109 in Minnesota on Sunday behind Jokic’s triple-double. Jokic stepped up and led the NBA with assists (12.8 per game) and sales (5.3). The mistakes come with the territory when it touches the ball that much, admitted coach Michael Malone. However, Malone wants Jokic’s assist-to-turnover ratio to be 3 to 1. « He understands that he has to be better and I’m sure he will, » said Malone. Nuggets: F Michael Porter Jr. missed a third straight game due to the league’s health and safety protocols with COVID-19. … The Nuggets won a coach’s challenge late in the third game. The foul by P.J. Dozier on a 3-point attempt was canceled. FLASHBACK TO ’18 The last time Minnesota beat Denver was Game 82 to end the 2018 season. That was a situation where the winners got into the playoffs and the Timberwolves got the upper hand in extra time. « I think our boys don’t like the game at all, » said Malone. Since then, Denver has captured back-to back division titles: « Although we lost the game in our third year with a chance of making the playoffs, there was no need to panic, there was no need to make major changes », explained Malone. “Everyone wants the get-rich-quick scheme. Sometimes you have to build it, let it grow, and let it come together like we did. Ryan Saunders, TOWNS UPDATEMinnesota coach, said the Karl-Anthony Towns center has « moved on » from a dislocated left wrist but is not available against Denver or again Thursday in Portland. « He does a little more where he can handle a basketball on the court, » Saunders explained. « As soon as we’re back in Minnesota, we’ll do more research and get him through the team and see where he is at this point. » UP NEXTTimberwolves: Minnesota has lost seven times in a row in Portland. Jared Goff is still recovering from the operation as the Rams prepare for the Seahawks in the playoffs on Saturday. </ P NEW YORK – Kyrie Irving scored 20 of his 29 points in the first half, leading the understaffed Brooklyn Nets to a 130-96 win over Utah Jazz on Tuesday night. Brooklyn, who came into the game with two straight losses and four out of five points, never dragged. The nets led 35-14 after the first quarter and 63-44 at halftime. Brooklyn's 19-point lead at halftime was its largest in about 10 months. In the Nets' 139-120 win over San Antonio on March 6, 2020, they were 21 points (75-54) ahead at halftime. The surge was a major contributor to the Nets attack in the first half, scoring 18 points in the first quarter and 20 at half time. Irving's 18 points in the first quarter was the third highest score any player on a team has scored in an opening quarter of the season. His 20 points in the first half marked the fifth time this season that he had that many in a first half. "(Irving is going to) score," said Bruce Brown. “It was hot. … Kyrie just went crazy today. “As brilliant as he was, Irving had help from Jarrett Allen and Caris LeVert. Allen recorded his third double-double of the season with 19 points and 18 rebounds. Allen wrote a change to his pregame meal from pasta with pesto sauce to pasta with alfredo sauce for his high point and rebound season. "I think that turned my game on tonight," Allen said with a grin. LeVert came off the bench and scored 24 points showing off the bench. Joe Harris came into play with 10 points. "It's really satisfying," said LeVert. The nets didn't let up in the second half as they drove to their fourth win in eight games this season. A sequence in the 1:34 final of the third quarter almost cleared the game away. It started with an Allen Alley-oop dunk from a feed from LeVert, followed by a jumper from LeVert, an outlier for the sixth man on the Nets, and Brooklyn's young tall man who hit the summer-beating putback. In this distance, Brooklyn expanded its lead from 92-70 to 98-73. Donovan Mitchell led Utah (4-3) with 31 points. Jordan Clarkson added 12, and Rudy Gobert and Royce O'Neale each had 10 for the Jazz, which won the two-game steak. "We are not ready for your pressure to come out," said Mitchell. "We just haven't done a lot right. … We have to find out who we want to be." TIP-INS: NETS: Brooklyn came into play with short hands and missed Spencer Dinwiddie (anterior cruciate ligament reconstructive surgery on his right knee) and Kevin Durant (post-boarding quarantine contact with a positive COVID-19 test) Tuesday night's game was the first of four games for Brooklyn this week – the networks receive Philadelphia on Thursday and Oklahoma City on Sunday and travel on Friday Before the game, freshman Steve Nash said in his first year, “The length of the quarantine is kind of a moving target.” Nash added that he didn't think Durant could be involved in “on-court activities” this week , who was replaced by Taurean Prince on the grid, averages 28.2, leading the Nets and fifth in the NBA, with an average of seven rebounds and 4.8 assis ts and had played six of the first seven games in Brooklyn prior to Tuesday night after suffering no recovery from a broken right Achilles tendon in 2019-20. JAZZ: Considering a report from ESPN which said seven seven members of the Los Angeles Clippers support team will be quarantined due to a positive COVID-19 test after Jazz's 106-100 win on New Years Day. Utah manager Quin Snyder believes outbreaks of the virus will challenge all teams in the league. "We've been through similar things and I'm sure everyone will at some point this season," said Snyder.
