World news – 200 mm falls are predicted as state striving for cyclone

The Bureau of Meteorology is monitoring a developing low off the tropical north coast that is expected to develop into a cyclone early to mid next week.

The deep in the Coral Sea, just off the coast of Cooktown, is expected to form into tropical cyclone Mirin by late Tuesday afternoon.

The likelihood of heavy rain is likely to increase in the coming hours. Areas like Hamilton Island will be up to 50mm high tonight. As of Sunday, falls of up to 200 mm could occur in some places.

« We will be looking at approximately 100-150mm per day in areas north of Mackay to approximately Cairns on this stretch of coast, with a focus on the Cassowary Coast and around Bowen and the northern part of the central coast. » Meteorologist Ricus Lombard said.

Mean temperatures have now returned to Southeast Queensland after a brief but powerful heat wave hit parts of the state last week.

« It’s pretty close to average temperatures. The next storms will be again on Tuesday, and some cooler temperatures will return from Wednesday. »
