World news – 120 mm and rising: SEQ drenched while the drenched rain continues

Forecasters have predicted when the fine weather will return to Southeast Queensland after prolonged wet weather over the long Easter weekend.

It wasn’t the Flood that was originally predicted, but that Easter the rainfall on the southeast corner remained persistent.

Although experts forecast up to 200mm of rain for the holiday season, the seven-day totals showed that most areas averaged between 20 and 40mm.

The hardest hit locations included Upper Springbrook at 119mm and Hervey Bay at 83mm. Meanwhile, the Northern Sunshine Coast looked 50mm to 70mm, the Gold Coast 20 to 40mm, and downtown Brisbane about 20mm.

« There weren’t any hard moments, but it was certainly widespread and persistent this Easter, » said BOM meteorologist Matt Marshall.

Local Sunshine Coast surfer Campbell Behan said the waves hit three to four feet on popular beaches like Noosa, Snapper Rocks, and Kirra Beach.

« After a little dry wave period, it was good to finally get some solid swell, » he said.

The rain is expected to subside in the coming days, but people are still urged to be careful in wet weather.

« We were able to see more of the stretch from Hervey Bay to the Gold Coast by Wednesday, » Marshall said.

It comes after a group of 11 campers and a dog were rescued from rising floods in Byfield National Park north of Yeppoon on Sunday evening.

A man also died in Gold Coast on Sunday after his car allegedly got stuck and accelerated into a tree.
