Fabio Wardley scored a formidable one punch knockout against Richard Lartey to further advance his status as one of the UK’s hottest heavyweight competitors.
The undefeated 25-year-old tested himself at a higher level after winning the English title in the summer and stopped Lartey dramatically, even faster than the current British champion Daniel Dubois.
Wardley pushed out a stiff push and looked for openings in Lartey’s high guard, who responded with a right hand in the opening round.
But Wardley exploded in the second action, lashing his left hand before a short, sharp right hook smacked Lartey onto the canvas.
Referee Victor Loughlin quickly waved it off, the Ghanaian was dizzy on screen, and Lartey received a lengthy medical examination before Wardley was awarded the 10th place. Celebrating his career victory, which came two rounds earlier than Dubois.
« I’m very happy with the goal, » Wardley told Sky Sports. « This knockout answered questions about whether I had one-punch power.
« I’m moving at a good pace, 10 fights in now. It was a good challenge and I passed it pretty easily, but I don’t want to get too carried away. «
