Weltnachrichten – AU – Passenger ferry runs aground with hundreds on board

. . It is believed that a strong gust of wind caused a ferry with more than 400 people on board to run aground in a Finnish archipelago.

. .

A passenger ferry with more than 400 people on board was towed to the quay on the day after it hit the Aland Islands. a Finnish archipelago in the Baltic Sea.

The 331 passengers and the 98-strong crew spent the night on the M / S Viking Grace, which ran aground just a few hundred meters from the ferry terminal in Mariehamn, the main town of the archipelago.

Tugs pulled the ship – which was only a few meters from the shore – from the shallows and towed it to the terminal.

Passengers got off and were registered at the terminal. They should later be allowed to get back on the ferry, where they were told which ships they would be transporting to Finland and Sweden.

There were strong winds and it rained heavily on Saturday. Some other ferry routes were out of order.

Jan Hanses, CEO of Viking Line, previously told the Finnish public broadcaster YLE that a strong gust of wind had blown the ship towards the coast, where it ran aground.

Another Viking Line ship, Amorella, ran aground in another part of the Aland Islands archipelago in September.
