A huge concrete sculpture that looks like a human vulva has caused a stir in Brazil.
The 33 meter long handcrafted piece is the work of visual artist Juliana Notari, who installed it on a hill in Usina de Arte, a rural art park in the state of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil.
On 30. December reported on Facebook about the work entitled “Diva” and described in detail how more than 20 men worked on the handmade sculpture, which is 16 meters wide and six meters deep.
The article states that the work aims to « question the relationship between nature and culture in our phallocentric and anthropocentric Western society » and to make people question the « problematization of gender » put. ”
It wasn’t long before it became clear she had succeeded when comments criticized the work on Facebook.
« The sexual organ was not created to be admired, let alone as an art, » wrote a Facebook user.
« It’s tasteless and unnecessary and has no meaning. You did this because you knew there was going to be criticism and that is what you wanted, advertising. ”
Others contained religious clues or outright misogyny, and the post had more than 25 as of Monday. 000 comments.
« Isn’t it enough to see so many women showing their bums with short shorts or miniskirts, now there is a vagina in an open field, » read another.
Olavo de Carvalho, often cited as an ideological influence on right-wing Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, addressed the artwork on Twitter with an obscene comment related to the male reproductive organ.
« Well done Juliana Notari who got men to create a 30-meter vagina during Bolsonaro’s presidency in Pernambuco, » he tweeted.
One of the most famous cartoonists in Brazil, Laerte Coutinho, a trans woman, also weighed in and tweeted: “There is a lot to think about in this work. ”
« Diva » is the latest from a series of works in which Notary deals with the idea of wounds.
“However, this wound is infinitely smaller when compared to the trauma of slavery, unprotected employment, ecocide and violent trauma that occurred in this usina as in other private colonial areas. ”
« While I know it would be an effective piece of art, I never thought people would hate it or that the reaction on social media would be massive, » she said.
He’s also targeted artists, and in December 2019 one of his top culture officials warned people that listening to rock music could lead to drugs, sex, abortion, and satanism.
Artists have remained silent in the face of these attacks, and Notari is one of those who criticize Bolsonaro.
« Diva » is a « possibility » because it cuts through the structural patriarchy of Brazil that is continually reinforced by Jair Bolsonaro’s far-right, hateful discourse, « she told CNN.
