United Nations – President-elect Biden is expected to announce that he has selected longtime diplomat Linda Thomas-Greenfield as U.. S.. . Ambassador to the United Nations, two sources tell CBS News. The announcement could come Tuesday.

Thomas-Greenfield is part of Mr. . Biden’s transition team is expected to focus on restoring the confidence and professionalism of the State Department, with a special focus on diversity.

She was a foreign service officer in administrations dating back to President Reagan, was ambassador to Liberia, and from 2013 to 2017 Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs. But when the Trump administration entered, it lasted five days before being fired, one of many career professionals pushed aside.

She became Senior Vice President at the Albright Stonebridge Group and co-chaired the « Advisory Committee on a Special Report from the Council on Foreign Relations Reviving the State Department and American Diplomacy ». « 

In choosing Thomas-Greenfield, a distinguished professional diplomat, over others such as former Mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg, Mr.. . Biden tells world leaders that U. . S.. . External relations will be more steak than sizzle.
