CM – Tasmania Bushfire Trial

A verdict is expected to be reached in civil proceedings brought against hundreds of Tasmanians who were hit by a devastating bushfire eight years ago.

The fortnightly forest fire in Dunalley, southeastern, devastated in January 2013 93 houses and 186 other buildings, including the school and the city police station.

About 400 people brought legal action against Melissa Jayne Barrett, who is said to have caused the fire negligently for failing to set up a campfire on her property in Forcett.

The Hobart Supreme Court heard a number of witnesses including Ms. Barrett and fire investigators.

Judge Stephen Estcourt will announce his decision in the civil case Friday morning.

An investigation into the bushfire in Dunalley and other fires in the area in 2013 estimated their total financial cost to be approximately $ 100 million.
