The Egyptian public prosecutor has arrested 23 suspects who were involved in the Toukh train accident on Sunday, in which 23 people were killed and 139 others were injured.

The workers arrested by Prosecutor Hamada al-Sawy include the train driver, his assistant, the head of railway maintenance in the accident area, the general director for track renovation, the general director for maintenance, mechanical engineers, a group of workers and technicians who specialize in the maintenance of towing vehicles, a technician at Shubra al-Khaima station and workers at Misr station.
Sawy also ordered the arrest of the director of the railway engineering department in the area of the accident and another engineer because they were negligent and unlawful in the performance of their work.
The prosecutor also ordered the release of both the Director General for Infrastructure Maintenance and the Head of the Central Unit Maintenance Department if the first LE100,000 for pays the deposit and the second LE50,000 for the deposit.
The Egyptian National Railway Authority is conducting an investigation to determine the causes of the accident, which occurred around 2:05 p.m. in the country’s Qalyubia Governorate.
Train No. 949 between Cairo and Mansoura left Cairo at 1:20 p.m. and was supposed to Arrive in Mansoura at 5:00 p.m.
Train accidents are common in Egypt, with some having resulted in large numbers of deaths and injuries.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has a rebuilding of the Egyptian national rail system, where authorities will update routes, add new routes and increase overall safety.
The rail renovation is part of a larger ongoing traffic overhaul that includes new high-speed trains, additional metro lines and road improvement projects.
