CM – Popular beach closed after an alarming find

After a series of discoveries, it will be closed to the public for at least two weeks.

A popular beach in Sydney will be closed to the public for two weeks after a discovery.

In August last year, a local resident at Little Bay Beach discovered asbestos that appeared to have washed up on the sand.

An investigation confirmed the discovery of the dangerous material, with more pieces being discovered along the beach.

Randwick City Council has since said that pieces of material containing asbestos were « regularly » found on the beach.

As a result, the council has ordered the beach to be closed for two weeks while an investigation is conducted to determine the source of the material.

« So that the detailed site survey can be carried out safely, quickly and efficiently as possible, the beach will be closed to the public from Monday, April 26, 2021, on weekdays for up to two weeks and reopened at the weekend, » said the city council of Randwick said in a statement.

« Every effort will be made to complete the work as soon as possible. However, the two-week program is necessary to avoid possible delays due to bad weather or large seas. »

The discovery poses a « low risk » to the community, the council said, but has advised anyone who comes across suspicious material not to touch it.

« Please do not touch, collect or pick up any material on the beach that looks like fiberboard. The material may be weathered and sometimes look like a shell or stone, » the council said.
