Annette, the new film by Leos Carax and its first in English, has been set as the opening night for the 74th Cannes Film Festival. After the opening ceremony, it will have its world premiere in competition.
The musical stars Marion Cotillard, Adam Driver and Simon Helberg. Set in contemporary Los Angeles, Annette tells the story of Henry, a stand-up comedian with a keen sense of humor, and Ann, an internationally renowned singer. In the spotlight, they represent the perfect couple, healthy, happy and glamorous. The birth of their first child, Annette, a mysterious girl with an extraordinary fate, will change her life. Pic also contains an original soundtrack by Sparks.
It will arrive nine years after the premiere of Carax ‘Holy Motors at the French festival in Cannes.

It was widely believed that Annette was ready for the 2020 edition of Cannes, but numerous high profile titles have been withheld to make their physical premieres on the Riviera after last year was forced to go virtual. That will now take place on July 6th, although it is not yet known what type of audience will be present if the pandemic situation continues.
As things stand, Cannes remains optimistic with its plans to work on its new dates on June 6th. to hold a physical festival and market by July 17th. As Deadline has reported, a separate virtual market will take place in early June, concurrently with an event by the major distributors.
« Given the development of public health in Europe and around the world and the reopening of cultural venues in mid-May, the festival continues de Cannes is planning its next edition with confidence and determination, « read a statement from the festival today. It has also been confirmed that the rest of the official selection will be announced in late May.
Annette will be produced by Charles Gillibert with Paul-Dominique Vacharasinthu and Driver. UGC will hit French cinemas at the same time as the Cannes premiere on July 6th. Amazon has US rights and Kinology handles sales for the rest of the world.
