The rate of effectiveness of the Moderna coronavirus vaccine in adolescents aged 12-17 years was 96% according to early data from the study in this age group.

Follow-up at 35 days found that the Teenage vaccine was generally well tolerated and no serious safety concerns were identified, said a press release from Moderna on Thursday.

« An initial analysis of 3,235 participants found the vaccine to be 96% effective in participants who did at least one Injection. The analysis included 12 cases starting 14 days after the first dose based on the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s definition of coronavirus, « the statement said.

As the incidence rate of Covid-19 is lower in adolescents, the case definition is less strict than in adult studies, resulting in the vaccine being effective against milder cases of the virus.

Moderna added that there will continue to be data in this study on adolescents and is currently discussing a possible change to its regulatory filings for its coronavirus vaccine with regulators.

It added that the study of its vaccine for children ages six months to eleven is still ongoing. </ Belgium could vaccinate people between the ages of 16 and 17 during the summer holidays if the vaccination campaign goes as planned, following a proposal from the Vaccination Task Force runs. The Pfizer vaccine has already been approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for this age group.

Moderna added that it is working to increase the number of coronavirus vaccines produced by the end of this year to 1 billion doses (its previous goal was to produce 800 million) and that it is investing to increase its global coronavirus vaccine supply to up to 1.3 billion doses in 2022.

Initial data also showed that booster vaccines improved people’s immune responses against major coronavirus variants, including the South African and Brazilian strains.

« We are encouraged by this new data, which increases our confidence that our booster strategy should protect against these newly discovered variants » said the company’s CEO, Stephane Bancel.
