Dominion Energy Inc., based in Richmond, VA, is aiming to mix hydrogen into its natural gas systems and invest in several pilot projects.

The utility company , which serves nearly seven million customers in 16 different states, said the pilots were studying how hydrogen blended natural gas works in pipelines and equipment. « Hydrogen is a huge innovation in terms of clean energy, » said Mark Webb, chief Dominion Innovation Officer. “It’s clean energy for homes and businesses, and clean fuel for vehicles and manufacturing facilities. Few other energy sources have the potential to do so much good in the entire economy. “

The company’s first hydrogen project has started at its training academy in Salt Lake City. The project is to mix 5% hydrogen into a test system to learn more about the molecule’s ability to run in real-world scenarios. If tests prove successful, the company plans to blend hydrogen into its Utah system, which serves over 1 million natural gas utility consumers. The company is also planning further pilots in North Carolina.

Dominion’s announcement came ahead of President Biden’s announcement Thursday that the US would aim to reduce macroeconomic greenhouse gas emissions by 50-52% by 2030 compared to 2005. Under Biden’s separate “Better Downsize” agenda, the United States must aim for a zero carbon electricity sector by 2035 and a climate neutral economy by 2050. With its commitment to zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, Dominion plans to carry out the hydrogen projects while serving as the primary sponsor of the Low Carbon Resources Initiative, a five-year research and development project (R&D) valued at $ 100 million from Electric Power Research Institute Inc. and Gas Technology Institute. The R&D projects consist of the development of alternatives to conventional natural gas.
