LONDON: Rafael Nadal and other leading players at the Monte-Carlo Masters have to wait nervously on Tuesday after Daniil Medvedev, number 2 in the world, tested positive for Covid-19.

The announcement was made ahead of Matchday 3 in one of ATP’s biggest events, with Medvedev being replaced by lucky Argentinian loser Juan Ignacio Londero in the draw, DPA reports.

Medvedev said in a statement: « It’s a big disappointment, not in Playing Monte-Carlo. My focus is on recovery now and I look forward to getting back on tour as soon and as safely as possible. «

The ATP said the 25-year-old was and will be isolated supervised by the tournament doctor and the tour’s medical team. Medvedev lives in the principality and his positive test will challenge the wisdom of the tournament, which allows players to stay at home and not in a strict bubble.

There is no evidence that Medvedev has broken any protocols , but it will undoubtedly be a worrying time as players who have had contact with him wait to see if there are more positive cases.

Great Britain’s Dan Evans who won 2019 runner-up Dusan Lajovic for his first win on tour for four years on clay 6: 3, 6: 7 (11: 13) and 6: 2, said: « That is definitely on my mind. I am very excited for a vaccination if I can. It would be Heartbreaking if I test positive at Wimbledon. «

» It is very important to stick to the protocols in force. If some people blow it ruins everyone else because if one person tests positive for this virus , it can go away very quickly, so if you had a scene yesterday en in England I will not make any contacts shortly. «
