Two top Super Bowl competitors just messed up the 2021 NFL Draft with a blockbuster trade.
The Chiefs acquired offensive tackle play against Orlando Brown, a selection for the second round in next week’s draft and a sixth round selection in the 2022 NFL draft from the Ravens in exchange for the first, third, and fourth round selection in 2021 and a fifth round selection. rounder in 2022, according to NFL Network.
Brown is a former third round draft pick who made two Pro Bowls as a proper tackle in his first three seasons. It was scheduled as the first pick in 2018 before bombing the NFL Combine and sliding down boards.
Brown demanded a chance to play the left tackle forward and the Ravens couldn’t take it. So he switched from blocking for one quarterback phenomenon (Lamar Jackson) to another (Patrick Mahomes).
It’s a strange deal because the Ravens are helping the Chiefs – their main obstacle to getting a Super Bowl out of the AFC achieve – to cure their biggest problem.
The Chiefs’ low-injury offensive line was revealed in Super Bowl 55. Instead of just waiting for the starters to get well, they cut off the duels against Mitchell Schwartz and Eric Fisher and lured top guard Joe Thuney from the Patriots into the free hand and traded brown for him.
According to ESPN The Ravens are supposed to replace Brown in a real duel by signing the veteran Alejandro Villanueva according to the draft. The longtime Steelers starter has remained a free agent longer than expected after many predicted him to land with the Colts.
Now the Ravens have more design capital without having to replace Brown with these picks. The Ravens are always one of the most active teams when it comes to moving up and down the board. In the first round, they hold picks # 27 and # 31.
According to reports, Brown will start the left tackle for the Chiefs in the final year of his contract, trying to earn extra time. Franchise Day in 2022 is also an option, as the Chiefs don’t want any selection from the first round to be traded for a one-year rent.
However, it’s clear that the Chiefs didn’t expect that a top-class offensive tackle would slip to 31st place and meet their needs. It is expected that five offensive tackles could be first round picks.
